OVERVIEW

The Prasat Bei is an early 10th century Hindu temple built by King Yasovarman I. The small temple was dedicated to Shiva and oriented towards the East. Its name translates to “the three towers”.

The sanctuary towers are located about 300 meters West of the South gate, between the Phnom Bakheng temple and the moat surrounding Angkor Thom. Their style reminds of the Prasat Kravan, that has five towers built around the same time.

Prasat Bei was designed with three brick towers standing as a row on a single sandstone platform. Those three towers symbolized the three main Hindu gods, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.

Just after Baksei Chamkrong and right before the bridge of the Southern Door of Angkor Thom. The whole of these three monuments can be done by walking.

A set of three brick towers between Baksei Chamkrong and the moat of Angkor Thom near the South Gate. The central prasat rises 10 meters. Construction was never completed. Some lintel carvings survive. Prasat Bei literally means ‘towers three.’ Best lighting in the morning.

This whole of three small brick towers close to Baksei Chamkrong does not miss a charm, and the proximity of ditch of Angkor Thom gives him much freshness but the visitors in a hurry will not be delayed there. The three towers are aligned in the North-South axis, facing the East. Only the tower of the medium is completed, the two others are truncated. The representation of Indra on a three heads elephant is the remarkable part of this building. There is an Angkor Thom ring moat side, it is quiet and also atmosphere is good. It is the ruins which can taste the beauty of the brick pattern of the Khmer construction.

3 sanctuaries on a single laterite platform

The Prasat Bei consists of a line of three brick towers on a single laterite platform. A single staircase in front of the central tower gives access to the platform, that is aligned North South measuring 24 meters long by 10 meters wide. The diminishing tiers on top of the sanctuaries are missing, except for the central tower.

The North tower was never finished; the sculptures on the lintel over the doorway is only a rough outline. The lintels on the central and South tower contain depictions of Indra on the three headed elephant Airavata. The central sanctuary houses a linga set on a pedestal.

Restored by EFEO

The temple was cleared by Henri Marchal in the 1910’s and restored by the EFEO in 1960.
