A final temple you’ll see in Battambang guides is Prasart Steung in Snoeung village, and a great little temple it is too, though it’s some way out of town on the Pailin road. A visit here could be combined with Phnom Sampeou, with Snoueng being the next village down the road. If road conditions are okay, there’s a loop taking you from Banan to Sampeou, making for a round day trip.
Prasart Stueng (also often referred to as Prasart Sueng) consists of a sandstone tower by the roadside which, while modest in scale, has some great and unusual carvings. Behind the modern wat are three older, probably 10th century towers, the central one of which has an outstanding red sandstone lintel.
It’s interesting to note that Steung would have represented something of an Angkorian frontier post before the trail headed into the wild country around what is now Pailin, to reach the old Khmer port of modern day Chanthaburi.
